Take the year 1809 . . .
  • The Peninsula War in Spain was in progress and Napoleon had invaded Austria. There were at least 20 battles and skirmishes on record, the most famous of which were:

    1. Coruna, at which Sir John Moore the British Commander in Chief was killed and

    2. Talavera, which established Arthur Wellesley, later Duke of Wellington as one of our most able Field Commanders, the man who went on to defeat the seemingly invincible Napoleon at Waterloo.

The 10 o’clock news would have been full of Napoleon’s war with the Austrians and in Spain.

Nobody noticed the babies born that year . . .
  • William Gladstone, who was destined to become one of England’s greatest Prime Ministers.
  • Alfred Lord Tennyson, who would become one of Britain’s finest poets and writers.
  • Edgar Allan Poe, the famous American writer, who was destined to live a short and tragic life.
  • In Paris, France the inventor of the blind alphabet, Louis Braille.
  • In Germany, the famous composer Felix Mendelssohn.

4
And on February 12, 1809, two men, one on each side of the Atlantic, were born . . .

  • In England Charles Darwin, who was to achieve fame (infamy) in science with his Evolutionary Theory was born and
  • In the USA - Abraham Lincoln – probably the greatest American President ever, was born.
  • If there had been a review of the year 1809, I’m certain these words would have been heard: “The destiny of the world is being shaped on the battlefields in Austria and Spain today.” But history was actually being shaped in the cradles of England and America.
5
During the Civil War, a young woman . . . J.H. Halbrook . . .
  • “Go, and do likewise” (Luke 10:37).
  • “What knowest thou, O wife, whether thou shalt save thy husband?  Or how knowest thou, O man whether thou shalt save thy wife?" (1 Corinthians 7:16).
  • “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father which is in heaven” (Mathew 6:16).

What is HTH?
  • House to House/Heart to Heart is a direct mail program sponsored by 930 cooperating churches of Christ.
  • Now in its 11th year.
  • Published 6 times a year, 8 pages, full color.
  • The mission of the local church is to save souls. Jesus’ expressed mission was to seek and save the lost (Luke 19:10), and His body on earth today, the church (Ephesians 1:22-23), is to do the same.

Just what is “evangelism”?
15
Biblical Figures for Evangelism:
  • Proverbs 11:30 compares evangelism to hunting.
  • Zechariah 3:2 and Jude 23 picture the soul winner as a fireman rescuer.
  • Mark 1:17 compares winning souls to catching fish.
  • Luke 15 uses a seeking shepherd, and coin collector, and a diligent father.
  • John 4:34-38 compares evangelism to sowing and reaping (cf. 1 Corinthians 3:6-9).

Reaching the World For Christ
  • HTH is now going to most of the states in the U.S. and several countries, while the website reaches much of the rest of the world.

Where do we go from here?
  • What does the future hold?
  • Will you help us achieve our vision of getting the Gospel to every person? If every sound congregation will send the Gospel to their own community, we’ll soon accomplish the task.
  • “Thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord” —1 Corinthians 15:57-58
